As we know, abrasive cloth and paper are also called COATED SANDING TOOL, which mainly consists of back paper or cloth, coated with the grain For grinding that is glued by resin-resin. Show as below :
A. construction of abrasive paper

Abrasive paper is made by base material, grinding grain, and adhesive resin.
NIKKEN material feature :

Base type Base paper weight(g/m2 ) Water-proof material weight(g/m2 ) Base thickness(μ)
Aw less 85 less110 approx 95
Cw 95 ~ 140 110 ~ 150 approx 140
Dw 140 ~ 200 150 up approx 190
Ew 200 up -- approx 270

Base type Weight for base(g/m2 ) Thickness for base (μ)
Jw Cotton 190~200 340~350
Weave fabric 190~200 330~340
Xw Cotton 270~280 460~470
Weave fabric 270~280 440~540

NIKKEN water-proof base material use the Japanese emulsion paper which with the best Flexibility is the best choice for waterproof flexible abrasive paper.
Kraft paper is used for jumbo roll, water-proof sanding paper and belts.

Others base feature and purposes:
Base material Anti-longitude tension
(Kg/25mm)
Feature and purpose
Aw approx.15

1.Weak tension better flexibility best for curve sanding .
2.Handy sanding, vibrating sanding pad.
3.This is the feature of Japanese abrasive paper.

Cw approx.30

1.Medium tension is the standard type for waterproof
2.Suitable for Taiwanese three-legged polish machine.
3.Emulsion Sanding Paper suits handy grinding and polishing.

Dw approx.65

1.Strong tension is heavy duty
2.Suitable for coarse grain as stroke sander
3.As well as vibration polish tool by hand

Ew approx.80 1.The stronger tension, the heavier duty
2.For wide belt as edge sander or wide belt sander and spindle sander

Jw Base material Anti-longitude tension
(Kg/25mm)
Feature and purpose
Common weave cotton fabric approx.25

1.Lower tension, better flexibility for paper sheet
2.Stroke belt, and sanding in skill

Chu-Tzi weave cotton fabric approx.40

1.Medium tension for curve sanding
2.Stroke belt sander for curve edge
3.Chu-Txi weave cotton fabric is the standard type for curve sanding

Argyle weave cotton fabric approx.60

1.Heavy duty with strong tension
2.Mainly for profile belt sander
3.Suit for spindle sander

B. Grain type :

Grinding grain consisted of natural ( Garnet, Flint ) and synthetic (silicone carbon, Aluminum oxide )

1.Natural grain :

  •  Garnet:
Shining as glass and with hardness, brittleness.
  • emery:
Consists of aluminum oxide and ferric oxide, specially for abrasive paper, and cloth, cloth sanding pad, polishing before anodized.

    Detail as below:
    Type Chemistry Mo-Hardness
    flint SiO 6~6.5
    garnet Al2O2、3FeO、3SiO2 7~8
    Emery Al2O2、Fe2O4 7.5~9

    Synthetic grain :
    Type Chemistry Mo-Hardness
    Aluminum oxide Al2O2 9.4
    Silicone carbon SiC 9.5~9.7
    Diamond 10

Sanding feature for each type of grain :
    Type mark color feature
Silicone carbon CC black 1.Hard and brittle, sharp shape.
2.Grind effectually, surface relatively rough after work.
3.Suit for heavy lacquer. Might be blocked on Flexible material.
4.Cause plumy easily on woody object.
    Aluminum oxide AA

    brown

    1.Medium hard, with tension.
    2.Grain relatively dull, light cutting.
    3.Easily slide on hard surface.
    4.Facial w/better effectiveness and process quality Un-blockage.
WA White 1.Effectiveness better than AA, without plumy, suit for wood.
    2.Non-burr, suit for wood working
3.Easily slide on shard surface, but facial
    4.Better and un-blockage.
    Garnet

    light brown

    1.low hardness and dull shape.
    2.Low grinding effectiveness, better facial.
    3.And non-burr, suit for wood.

C.GLUE ( Adhesive )

Glue divided into two types, natural glue with low anti-humidity, easily influenced by weather. Recently polyester resin takes its place. NIKKEN use double glue to firm the back and grain.
For heavy polish work, soft glue for light sanding work, hard glue for heavy sanding work.
